Science 1 – You have been learning about the first part of the digestive system – the mouth. Now you will learn about what happens to food after you have chewed and swallowed it. Click here.


Click on the question ‘What is the digestive system?’ Watch the video, read the information underneath the have a go at the quiz. Do the same for ‘What happens in your stomach’ and ‘What happens in your intestines?’

Science 2 – Look at the front page of your knowledge organiser to see how the different parts of the digestive system fit together. Click here if you can’t find it – Knowledge organiser. Now fill in the labelling sheet.

Science 3 – You are going to investigate what happens when food gets digested in the intestines. You will need:

A clear plastic bag, a glass of orange juice, a glass of water, biscuits, a banana, a bowl, a tea towel and one leg of a pair of tights.

Next, scroll down to where it says ‘Have a go’. Use the step-by-step instructions to make your own model. I hope it isn’t too messy!

Science 4 - Make your own wearable digestive system! Use an old, light coloured t-shirt or a cardboard box or sheets of paper stuck together. Try to make this into something you can wear like in the photo below. If you are using a cardboard box, you could cut holes for your arms and head if it’s big enough or use a side of it and tie it around the back of your neck with string. If you are using paper you could sellotape the sheets on to an apron or a t-shirt. Use a black marker pen to draw the complete digestive system. The stomach and the intestines are bigger than you think. Use the photo below to draw them in approximately the right size. Add colour if you like and label the different sections. Please send us a photo and bring your system in next week for display. We can’t wait to see them.

Science 1 – Teeth impression. This week you are going to find out more about your unique teeth. For the first activity, you are going to bite down gently on something to make an impression of your teeth – you will be able to see in more detail what your teeth look like.  Have a look for something that will leave a mark when you bite onto it (ask an adult first). You could use a Styrofoam plate or take away box, a thin piece of cheese, bread or some clean playdough. There is a recipe below if you want to make some. Bite gently then take a look at the marks your teeth left behind. Is there a difference between the top half of your teeth (the maxilla) and the bottom half (mandible)? Find your different teeth types from the impressions – incisors, canines and molars. Ask someone else in your family to do the same. Compare your teeth. What is different? What is the same?


You will need

  • 8 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp table salt
  • 60ml warm water
  • food colouring
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil 


  1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together the water, a few drops of food colouring and the oil.
  2. Pour the coloured water into the flour mix and bring together with a spoon.
  3. Dust a work surface with a little flour and turn out the dough. Knead together for a few minutes to form a smooth, pliable dough. If you want a more intense colour you can work in a few extra drops of food colouring.
  4. Store in a plastic sandwich bag (squeeze out the air) in the fridge to keep it fresh.


Science 2 – Teeth count Use a mirror to count your teeth, how many have you got? Write down how many incisors, canines and molars you have. How many of your teeth have been replaced with adult teeth? See what other features you can see your mouth, such as bumps on your tongue (papillae) or the dangly bit at the back (uvula). Draw a diagram of your teeth with the correct number of incisors, canines and molars like in the mouth diagram sheet. Your teeth impressions from the science 1 lesson might help.

Science 3 – Uses of teeth Think carefully about how different teeth help you to eat. Remember your work on human teeth – incisors are good for chopping, canines are good for tearing and molars grind your food.  Collect a range of different types of foods from the kitchen to test this out. You will need some food that you think you will need your different teeth for, for example marshmallows, apples, biscuits, lettuce, bread, grapes, yoghurt and cooked chicken. Test the food one at a time and decide which type of teeth helped you to eat it. Record your results in the Uses of teeth table. What problems might you have if you had no teeth at all?

R.E. 1 – Lent is a period of time when Christians think about things that need to change in their lives to become more like Jesus Christ.

Recall what happens on Ash Wednesday (Ashes on our head normally to show that we have all sinned and need to ask for forgiveness). Discuss the meaning of the symbols of ashes, e.g. seeking forgiveness, desire to change to be more like Jesus.

Create an acrostic poem out of the word “change” to explore some of the things you might try and do during Lent to become more like Christ.


Clean my room each day.

Help parents carrying bags.

Accompany someone to shops

Nurse somebody if they are feeling unwell/hurt themselves

Greet somebody when you see them for the first time each day

Encourage somebody to keep going.

Design technology 1 – We have been thinking about why it is important to have a healthy, balanced diet. This week, make a healthy snack for yourself and your family. You could make some fruit kebabs, chop some vegetables to dip into hummus, use the recipe for carrot and courgette muffins or invent your own recipe. Maybe you could send us a photo of your creation.


Design technology 2 – Look in the kitchen for some food packets and have a look at the labels. You will find nutrition information about what the food contains, for example the amounts of fat, saturates (less healthy fat) and sugar. Can you find any with the traffic light system on the front? Use the traffic lights or the ‘Nutrition’ box on some packets to fill in the Food labels activity sheet. Remember that bacteria in our mouths like to feed on sugars on our teeth which can damage them. We should make sure that we don’t have too many sugary foods and that we brush our teeth twice a day.

Science 1 – You are going to investigate the effects of different drinks on a tooth-like substance. Instead of teeth, you will use eggs because the enamel (the hard coating) of eggs is similar to teeth. Teeth and egg enamel are both made from calcium carbonate. Choose six different drinks such as fruit juice, full sugar fizzy drink, milk, water and coffee. Pour them into six separate beakers. Find somewhere safe to keep them as they will be there for a week. Place individual eggs or eggshells into the beakers. Observe what happens to the eggshells over the week. Record what happens each day by writing or drawing on the Enamel investigation sheet or by taking photos. Did any eggshells dissolve or become stained? Can you remove any stains by brushing with toothpaste? From what you have found out, put the drinks in order from best to worst in terms of being healthy for your teeth.

Welcome to a new term and a new topic – Burps, Bottoms and Bile!


Open wide – let’s take a look inside. We’re on a voyage of discovery to investigate the busy world inside your body. Do you have a toothy grin or a winning smile? Take dental impressions and test the effects of sugary substances on your pearly whites. Follow a tasty morsel as it makes its way through your digestive system, helped by some mouthwatering saliva. And don’t forget the importance of good hygiene at both ends. And whilst we’re talking business, could you recognise an animal just by its poo? Are you brave enough to take the challenge? Make a working model of the digestive system and use it to persuade others to eat healthily. Learn how to look after this marvellous belching, squelching, mixture making machine we call our body.

Let’s get started! Read the knowledge organiser then choose at least one of the activities from this sheet to do every afternoon.

Try to follow the whole mass using the booklet. Listen carefully to the readings and to the Gospel. Which books of the bible do they come from? What is the message of the Gospel reading today? Do you have any questions which you wonder about this unit or anything you are puzzled by?
